ATO training begins with an intensive 20-hour academic program covering a wide spectrum of anti-terrorism issues including the dynamics of terrorism, characteristics of explosive and WMD terrorism, recognition of hazardous devices, operations security (OPSEC), suspicious activity recognition and investigation, performance based physical security, mail screening, and response to various types of terrorist attacks.
Upon completion of the academic portion of the training, all ATO candidates are required to complete the ATO Written Examination with a score of 80% or higher.

Before graduating as CIS ATOs, all candidates will also be required to pass another test on ATO Standard Operating Procedures and practical skill evaluations in facility and vehicle search methods.

After successfully completing the ATO academic program and search training, ATOs are required to qualify with the .223 caliber AR-15 rifle and the 9mm Springfield XD handgun.

All ATOs must qualify with a score of 90% or greater. This score requirement exceeds the standards mandated by the FL Division of Licensing and every law enforcement agency in the State of Florida.
