After the academic training and weapons qualifications, ATO candidates must complete rules of engagement and tactical training. The tactical training component includes instruction modules in close quarters battle (CQB), facility search for intruders, and response to various assault scenarios.

The tactical training component is both mentally and physically demanding. The photo on the left shows ATOs practicing "wounded man" drills.

Many of the exercises conducted during ATO tactical training are designed to test the candidates' discretionary judgement capabilities and judicious use of force. Scenarios range from simple intruder searches to armed assaults on entry points by multiple adversaries.
