CIS Protection Officers: Career Advancement

There are two primary ways to advance as a CIS protection officer:

1. Division/Assignment Advancement

2. Rank Promotion

Division and Assignment Advancement

Officers that do not initially meet the requirements for Special Services Group assignment, may increase their status to SSG by demonstrating their capabilities in the field. The time required for this varies depending on the officer's performance and his/her previous experience.

Once an officer reaches SSG status, a wide range of opportunities become available. For example, an officer desiring more pay and a more exciting assignment may volunteer for patrol duty. If the officer's performance and training are sufficient, the officer may be transferred to patrol status and paid an additional bonus. Officers that desire even more challenging assignments may volunteer for STOP team duty and participate in carefully-orchestrated operations to clean up crime-ridden properties.

Officers that demonstrate exceptional potential are often selected for additional training and assigned to advanced operations, such as executive protection, anti-terrorism, and special workplace violence details. Officers assigned to these types of projects receive significant increases in pay and prestige.

The key to success in steering your career as a CIS officer is training and performance. CIS provides numerous opportunities for advancement and additional pay. However, CIS requires that officers earn these benefits by excelling in their duties and taking advantage of the training opportunities provided by CIS.

Rank Promotion

CIS promotes officers on the basis of performance and leadership skill--NOT tenure. Officers that demonstrate excellent knowledge of their duties, positive personal qualities, and leadership capabilities are rapdily promoted to higher ranks. With the responsibilities of higher rank comes increased pay and benefits.

The following is a description of the CIS command/rank system.
