In Memory of Mathew Little (Bravo 114)Early in the morning, on May 16, 2011, CIS Protection Officer Mathew Little was murdered while performing a routine patrol of Mariner’s Pointe Apartments in South St. Petersburg. CIS dispatchers contacted the St. Petersburg Police Department when they couldn’t get Mathew to respond to radio calls. CIS was notified at approximately 2am that St. Petersburg Police Dept had found Officer Little’s body. Mathew normally worked the 15th Street corridor in the USF area of Tampa. He was in St. Pete covering a shift for a fellow officer who had been deployed for military reserve duty, along with approximately 30 other CIS officers. He had covered this shift before, and was familiar with the area. Mathew was a 2 year veteran of CIS who took pride in the de-escalation techniques he used to diffuse emotionally charged situations. He was well liked and respected by the community he served and by the CIS family. He was the type of officer who had no problem covering when needed. The kids who knew Matt, who they affectionately called “Chicken Little,” are devastated by his loss, as are their parents. For many of them, he was the only positive male role model in their lives. In true CIS spirit, other officers in the sector have stepped up to spend extra time with these kids to help them come to terms with this tragedy The way Matt first came to CIS speaks volumes as to the type of person he was. He originally interviewed with CIS in early October of 2009. He was told that due to his lack of a G license, and, military or law enforcement experience, he would either by hired as a Romeo, or not eligible for employment. Mathew was smart, well liked, and great at his job. He was 26 years old with a bright future in front of him. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was in the final stages of his application process and he was set to marry his fiancé Suzie on 11/11/11.
